DYK I Love to Sweat + lululemon's Seawheeze 2017 Half Marathon Recap/101

I have a secret. I'm totally obsessed with all things sweaty.

My not-so-secret love affair began over twenty years ago, when I was five, and played my first softball game. From there, I discovered volleyball, yoga and then found my true lifelong sweat love -- running.

In all seriousness, I really do love to workout and fitness is a huge, huge part of my everyday life.

In particular, I spent a lot of my sweat time either doing yoga (I'm actually in yoga teacher training right now, but more on that later!), [solidcore] or running.

Speaking of running -- earlier this year, after I finished up grad school, I got back into my half-marathon running groove and travelled to Vancouver, British Columbia, Canada to run the lululemon Seawheeze Half Marathon.

A post shared by Sandi Moynihan (@sandimoynihan) on

Guys. Let me tell you. I love a good half marathon -- but this race was outstanding! From the pre-race day expo to the free swag to the post-race brunch to the actual race, I had an outstanding time.

Here's a little recap/101 of the weekend for anyone who might be interested in running next year's race:

lululemon's Seawheeze 2017 Half Marathon Recap/101

Signing up for the race: Signing up for Seawheeze is almost a race in of itself. I logged on right at the moment that the race went life to sign up and the race was sold out in 5 minutes. Crazy! I highly recommend being 100% ready to go if you want to score a bib -- and be prepared that you still might not get a bib. If you can't score a bib right away, don't worry. There's a bib-swap program and lots of Facebook groups where people try to swap/sell bibs over the months leading up to the race due to scheduling conflicts, injury, etc.

Mailed swag: When you sign up for Seawheeze, you must enter in your shorts size and choose from two different styles of shorts during the registration process. A few months before the race begins (right when your training starts!) surprise, surprise, you get mailed a packet with a pair of limited edition Seawheeze lululemon running shorts in your size. This year, I chose the looser ladies option and loved the black and while flowered pattern.

In addition to getting mailed a pair of shorts, this year, I also got mailed a training calendar and training instructions packet featuring recipes and workouts. I actually followed this training regimen and found it to be excellent. Fun fact, this year, this information was also available online and I know there was also an app (I didn't used it though).

Registration: Once the big race weekend finally arrived, we (Mr. Man so nicely travelled with me) headed to the Vancouver Expo center to register and was pretty impressed with the check-in process. While I did have to wait in line, it moved quickly and there were plenty of volunteers telling me where to go, etc. Once I got to the check-in booths, I scanned my registration email and received a lululemon string backpack (this was also my checked race day bag!) filled with a few goodies. I also received my shoelace timing chip.

Free expo swag: After registration, we headed out into the Expo space where I enjoyed taking some photos in front of Seawheeze decor, scoring some samples from Nuun and Saje, applying a temporary tattoo and even participating in a lululemon bra-fitting study. After that, we headed to explore Vancouver and then to our Air BnB for the night to get some much-needed shut eye.

Race: The day of the race started pretty similarly to other race I've ran: there was the standard warm up, followed by squishing into overcrowded pace corrals lead by "Pace Beavers" (aka lululemon ambassadors in blue shirts), followed by a slow, trickling start. Once things got going, however, I really enjoyed the course and the race experience. I particularly loved the race cheer stations scattered throughout the course -- how fun!

Post-Race: As soon as I crossed the finish line, I was immediately given my medal, a pair of shades, a bottle of water and a wet washcloth (nice touch!). I was also offered a Vega bar (meh, I don't like these) and instructed to pick up my free post-run brunch. The boxed brunch was surprisingly delicious -- a local company in Whistler made the boxes and they were DEVINE! I also scored a free runner's reward from Saje one my way out of the race area. After I ate my lunch and cleaned up, Mr. Man and I headed into Vancouver for the day to explore.

Sunset Festival: I was pretty tired after a day of running and exploring Vancouver, but Mr. Man and I decided to head the the Sunset Festival (aka lululemon's giant yoga class + post-race party) to see what it was all about. We missed the yoga class part of the festival as well as the concert opener, the Cold War Kids (oops) but got to see Young the Giant play. We didn't stay too long because we were tired, but people seemed to have a great time and I saw lots of fun touches floating around the gorgeous Stanley Park venue, like lounge stations, tasty food and signature lululemon beers.

All in all, my favorite parts of experience, besides running, were sporting my free lululemon shorts (woo!), scoring some sweet Saje oils and swag, sampling new Nuun flavors (I'm so obsessed now) and the free post-run brunch box.

Mr. Man even got up early to cheer me on -- how nice is that?

I hope I can run this race again next year!

Writing on Running for Spright

I love to run -- and I know a ton about running as a result.

However, like most things fitness-oriented, I know that my first-hand knowledge of any topic is only just a slice of the knowledge out there, especially when it comes to weather-related running info.

Seeing as winter is in full swing (with no sign of spring in sight!) here in DC, I decided to tackle the seasonally relevant topic of winter weather running for my latest Spright.com article.

As part of my research (and to help highlight some awesome runners out there!) I reached out to a few running pros and asked them for their top five running tips. Here's a bit about who I spoke with:
Dorothy Beal: This Washington, D.C. blogger, speaker, mother, and runner has a personal best marathon time of 3:11, appeared on the cover of Women’s Running magazine, and has a great running Instagram feed.
Joshua Holmes: With over 150 marathons and ultras under his belt (including 31 100-milers!), Holmes’s training takes him up and down mountains and through all kinds of climates. The frequent traveler shares his expertise on his site, Run It Fast, as well as on Twitter and Instagram.

Finn Vogler: This Hamburg, Germany-based competitive runner and member of the Asics Frontrunner team once completed four half marathons in four days, and he’s got a great running-inspired Instagram feed currently full of gorgeous snowy scenes.

Monica Olivas: This Southern California runner started her Run Eat Repeat blog six years ago as a way to document her marathon training, diet, and weight-loss journey. She’s a certified personal trainer and chronicles her racing and training on her blog and Instagram.

It was so amazing talking to these pro (or at least serious) runners about their craft. I was totatally blown away with the awesome and practical advice they had to share with me about winter running. So much so that I had a really hard time narrowing down all the amazing tips and tricks!

Here's a sneak peak at part what I did end up including in the story:

What do you do to prepare your body to have a successful run out in the cold?

Dorothy Beal: First thing I do when I plan to run in cold weather is to get my head on straight. If I’m focused on how low the temperature is or how much I don’t want to run in the cold, then the run is miserable before I’ve even started. Instead, I focus on how nice it will be to get fresh air after spending more time indoors, how lovely the sun will feel on my face (don’t forget sunscreen in winter — you can still burn!) or simply how good I will feel when the run is over and I’m back inside warming up in a hot shower. … In the winter I am concerned about pushing myself too hard when I am not warmed up, so I take a little extra time to do some active stretching indoors so I don’t feel tight in that first warm-up mile.

Joshua Holmes: Oftentimes we overcomplicate running, whether it be in the heat or cold, and forget that it’s simply running. Extreme temperatures can punk us out and make the excuse demons pop up, making it easier to skip a run. However, if we always waited for perfect weather to run then we’d rarely run. … I’ve run in temps from 6º all the way up to 122º. It’s all about acclimating and being properly dressed and fueled/hydrated.

I love looking at my friends' photography work. I love working with them on photography projects even more.

So when I got a chance to work my my fabulous friend, Sara Snyder, on an upcoming Fiterazzi sports bra article, I was tickled pink with excitement. While the article isn't quite finished yet, the photos are, and they turned out fabulous!

Take a look at my favorite pics from Sara's work & come back for my low-down about the article when its published!

Let's get some shoes. No really.

Late last week, a blog post I worked with Potomac River Running on about the importance of getting fit for the proper workout shoe finally ran on Fiterazzi... yay! You can check it out here!

Not only did the post feature some pretty awesome photos by my fellow photographer and long-time friend Sara Snyder, but it totally dove into the importance of taking care of your main mode of transportation... your feet!

I think most people go to the running store and think, 'Oh, that shoe's the most expensive, so it's the best' or 'That shoe looks really intense, and I'm having foot pain, so I need an intense shoe like that,' when honestly, that's not how it works. Just read the article and you'll see what I mean.

See, every person walks differently, so, every person needs a different type of shoe. Think of your shoe as your finger print -- it should be unique and fitting just for you!

In the two hours I spent at PR Running learning about the science of running shoes and talking to the shoe fit team, I have one big takeaway to pass on... Go. Get. Fitted!

P.S. PR Running also did an adaptation of my Fiterazzi article... how cool!

All the things I'm working on for The USO & Fiterazzi!

Hey-oh blog world! Happy Friday! Are you planning anything fun for this weekend? Mr. Boyfriend and I are planning on hitting up Union Brewery this weekend as well as seeing the O's play and watching Josh Abbot Band at 9:30 club. What can I say, we're busy folks :)

I've been busy lately for the USO & Fiterazzi, drafting up stories and videos for all to see. I just produced this awesome video of a care pack stuffing event on Capitol Hill this Wednesday. It was my first chance to practice shooting time lapses, so I was pretty impressed with the result.

I even decided to dabble in some new media and shot a hyperlapse on-scene.

I've also been busy writing a lot of cool stories for the USO, including this one about Operation C.H.A.M.P.S which is a educational program for military children. This year the program is headed to South Korea to visit kids living overseas with their families. I got to chat with the authors a little bit about all the awesome work that they do and then wrote all about it for the world to see.

Also, my first of two peices for Fiterazzi about the art of getting fitness shoes that are properly fitted ran today! I'm so proud of this piece and totally love the photographs and the awesome people at Potomac River Running who helped me make it informative and fun for the Fiterazzi community.

Enjoy :)

My first HIIT graphic/workout is live!

Guys! Guys. Its up. Its live. Its a real thing.

The first ever fitness graphic I've made is up on the web for everyone to see, enjoy and use. How cool!

I don't mean to brag, but I'm really super proud about this. Graphics are something that I'm not naturally inclined to do, which is fun for a creative type like myself.

Not to mention, it's on Fiterazzi, which is an online magazine I totally LOVE writing for and sharing my skills with. I think its so important to support publications like this that are doing all they can to promote realistic healthy living -- not just the latest healthy crazes and quick weight loss programs. Amen.

I might be having too much fun on vacation: Is that even possible?

Yesterday I might have gotten a little out of hand taking selfies in my fantastic new workout gear from BODYPOP. This is what happens when a workout fashionista has too much time and a beautiful setting... oh well :)

I'm still totally in love with this collection of clothes, although I am finding that I prefer the pieces for less-intense workouts, like Pilates or yoga.

I'm also in the process of reviewing headbands and tennis shoes for some of my next Fiterazzi articles, so I've been busy running, biking, hiking and testing them all out. I can't wait until these articles come out -- I've had such fun trying all these new products!

Happy vacation!
